What is the difference between CNC milling and CNC turning?

CNC milling and CNC turning are both subtractive machining processes, but they shape parts in different ways. CNC milling holds the workpiece in place while rotating cutting tools remove material from multiple angles.

CNC turning rotates the workpiece while a fixed cutting tool removes material. This process works well for cylindrical, round, or symmetrical parts such as shafts, pins, bushings, fittings, and connectors.

Milling is often the better fit for flat surfaces, pockets, slots, and complex features. Turning is often the better fit for round parts that need consistent diameters, threads, grooves, or tapers.
